Exploring the colours and scents of Autumn
Jeffers Room teacher, Magdalena, tells us all about their Autumn display in the exploration area and how children were able to learn from what was on offer.
The topic we chose for the Exploration area in Jeffers room this week was "Autumn- the Season of Harvest”. During the carpet sessions we talked about the seasons, how they change and what’s distinctive about them.
The team used a variety of books to help pique children's interest in the topic of autumn and harvest and help teach children that we can find information from books. Then children approached the autumn tray and were able to explore; touching and smelling a variety of root vegetables and fruits that were on display. Some children were seeing some of these vegetables and fruits for the first time and quickly learnt their names. They talked about different shapes and sizes of the vegetables and fruits as well as trying to use language to explain why some vegetables were smaller or bigger than the other and what can we make with them, e.g. cook a pumpkin soup or make an apple pie.
We continued to explore the activity during the provision and to extend it further, the children, supported by the adult, cut the root vegetables and some fruits in order to explore their smell and texture.
